About this product
Konami released Contra 3 The Alien Wars on the Super Nintendo in 1992, and plenty of players still rank it as the best game in the series. You play one of two soldiers fighting an alien invasion through a city that is already in ruins, with very little time to think between explosions.
This page sells a Pandora Game Console package built for it: a complete home arcade console with the Pro board, ready to play Contra 3 once you add the archive card below.
Contra 3 gave you two guns at a time and a button to switch between them, so you could save the spread gun for a boss and fight the small stuff with something else. It added smart bombs that clear the screen. You hang from rails, climb walls, and fight a boss that tears up the scenery as it comes for you. Two of the stages switch to an overhead view that used the Super Nintendo's rotation effects.
It is also hard. The co-op mode helps, because a second player can cover your back while you deal with whatever is coming down from above.
The Pandora Platinum Pro mainboard runs the Super Nintendo version over HDMI with upscaling, so the sprites stay sharp on a large screen instead of smearing into a blur. The soundtrack comes through as Konami wrote it, which matters in a Contra game.
Contra 3 Alien Wars is on the Run & Gun Games List Archive Card, the game card offered in slot one. The card goes much further than one game. You also get Contra and Super Contra in arcade and NES versions, Metal Slug 1 through 6 plus Metal Slug X, Alien Soldier, Mega Man X, Midnight Resistance and Rapid Reload Gunners Heaven. Click for Game List to see the full lineup. Picking "No Game Card - YOU WONT HAVE ANY GAMES!" leaves you with an empty console.
Here is what comes in the box:
Contra was born in the arcade, and it plays better with a lever than a thumb pad. Aiming diagonally while you run is the whole game, and an eight-way stick makes those angles easy. "Get the Official Sanwa Upgrade?" adds the joysticks and buttons from Japanese cabinets, as buttons only, joysticks only or both. Default Pandora Platinum Hardware is the standard choice.
The second slot offers the 3 and 4 Player Arcade Games Archive, the 3D Fighting Game Archive Card or Mario Kart Madness & Friends. The third slot offers Mortal Kombat Life Retro, the Neo Geo Arcade Games List Archive or the Retro Arcade Games List Archive, and either can stay at No Additional Game Archive. Watch the two videos on this page to see Contra 3 running on the Pandora Game Console.
