About this product
Dead or Alive 2 is the Tecmo 3D fighter that reached arcades in 1999 and the Sega Dreamcast soon after, and this listing is a Pandora Game Console package set up to play it. The Dreamcast pad was never a good match for a fighting game. Here you get an arcade joystick and a row of proper arcade buttons instead.
DOA2 moves faster than most 3D fighters of its day. A lot of it comes down to holds: guess which strike is coming, press hold with the right direction, and you turn their attack into your counter. The stages have walls you can knock people through and ledges that drop the fight to a lower floor, so a round can turn on one read. Kasumi, Ryu Hayabusa, Helena, Jann Lee and the rest of the cast are there, and tag mode lets you switch between two fighters mid round.
The game does not live on the console itself. It comes on an archive card, and the first card slot on this page is the Fighting Masters Archive Card. Dead or Alive 2 sits on that card next to Tekken 2, Tekken 3, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Street Fighter 3 3rd Strike, Garou Mark of the Wolves and a long run of King of Fighters games. In the box:
One option in that card menu reads "No Game Card - YOU WONT HAVE ANY GAMES!" Take it at face value. Without a card the console boots to an empty menu.
You choose between the Pandora Single Panel, the Pandora Dual Panel and the Pandora Wireless 2 Joystick Separated Edition. The single panel puts both sticks on one board. The other two give each player their own controller, which is nicer when two people are trading holds on the same couch and keep bumping elbows.
The default Pandora Platinum hardware plays DOA2 well. If you take it seriously, Sanwa is the upgrade to look at. These are the Japanese levers and buttons used in arcade cabinets, lighter to the touch and quicker to respond, and on this page you can upgrade the buttons, the joysticks, or both.
A second card is optional. The choices here are the Mortal Kombat Life Retro Archive Card, the 3 and 4 Player Arcade Games Archive and the Retro Arcade Games List Archive. The third slot adds Mario Kart Madness & Friends and the Neo Geo Arcade Games List Archive. Every card has a Click for Game List button, so read through the titles before you decide. If one card is enough, leave the slot on "No Additional Game Archive".
Dead or Alive 2 is compatible only with the Pandora Game Console Platinum Pro version board. Older Pandora Platinum boards will not run it. There is a gameplay video on this page if you want to see it move before you buy.
