About this product
Ask a room of SNK fans to pick the best King of Fighters and King of Fighters 98 is going to come up early. SNK released it on the Neo Geo in 1998 as a dream match: no storyline to wrap up, just nearly every popular fighter from the earlier games on one roster, tuned so that a lot of them are worth playing.
This package is a Pandora Game Console set up for the AES version of KOF 98, the home cartridge release of the Neo Geo game, played on a real arcade panel.
You pick a team of three and fight them in order, so losing your first character is not the end of the match. Before the fight you choose between Advanced mode, with its power stocks and quick rolls, and Extra mode, the older system where you charge your meter by hand. The game uses the classic four-button Neo Geo layout of light and heavy punches and kicks, which leaves the six-button panel with room to spare.
It is a fast game, and short hops and runs reward clean inputs. You can play it on a pad, but those inputs come out more reliably on a lever and buttons.
If KOF is your game, the stock Default Pandora Platinum Hardware is fine to start. If you want to take it further, "Get the Official Sanwa Upgrade?" gives you Sanwa buttons, Sanwa joysticks, or both: the same Japanese parts arcade players are used to. Then invite someone over and put some money on the next set.
KOF 98 runs on the Pandora Platinum Pro board.
The game is on the Fighting Masters Archive Card, which is the card this package is built around. That card also carries the later KOF games up to 2003 and plenty of Capcom fighters, so you are not buying a one-game box. You can add a second card, such as the 3 and 4 Player Arcade Games Archive or the Mortal Kombat Life Retro Archive Card, and a third, where the Neo Geo Arcade Games List Archive is the natural fit for an SNK fan. Choosing "No Game Card" means no games at all, so do not skip the first slot.
For hardware, choose the Pandora Single Panel, the Pandora Dual Panel or the Pandora Wireless 2 Joystick Separated Edition. KOF is a head-to-head game, so if two of you will be playing most nights, the Dual Panel or the separated sticks make more sense than sharing one panel on a Pandora Game Console.
