About this product
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! is Nintendo's 1987 NES boxing game, and this Pandora Game Console package plays it on a big TV with an arcade stick in your hands. You are Little Mac, a kid from the Bronx with a trainer on a bicycle, and every fighter in the circuit is bigger than you.
Glass Joe goes down easily. Von Kaiser, Piston Honda and King Hippo each teach you something new, and by the time you reach Bald Bull and Soda Popinski the game has stopped being polite. At the top of the ladder is Tyson himself, who can end the fight with one uppercut in the first few seconds.
Punch-Out!! is less about slugging and more about reading. Every opponent has a tell before he swings, a twitch or a flash or a little pause, and the whole game is learning to dodge on that tell and punch back into the opening. Get it right and you earn a star for the big uppercut. Get it wrong and you are on the canvas.
That kind of timing feels good on arcade buttons. Left and right punches sit under your fingers, and the stick handles dodges and blocks. It is still an NES game, so the controls are simple, but a solid lever and real buttons make the counters feel quicker than a worn controller from the 80s.
The Pandora Platinum Pro board scales the graphics up to fit any size TV, so the sprites, the crowd and Doc's advice between rounds are still sharp on a modern screen. You hear the same music and the same bell.
The game comes on the Best Arcade Sports Games Archive, the first card the builder offers here. It is a good card for a boxing fan: alongside this game it carries the Punch Out arcade edition, Super Punch-Out!!, Ring King, both Ready 2 Rumble games, NBA Jam Tournament Edition, NBA Hangtime, Windjammers, Tecmo Super Bowl and Track and Field. Leave the card off with "No Game Card - YOU WONT HAVE ANY GAMES!" and the console arrives with nothing to play, since it has no games installed.
