About this product
If we could only keep one Mortal Kombat, it would be Mortal Kombat 2. This Pandora Game Console package plays the 1993 arcade version, plug and play, from a Single or Dual Panel arcade stick on your TV.
Midway had a year of feedback from the first game and used all of it. The sprites got bigger and sharper, the fighters got faster, and the roster went from seven to twelve. Kitana, Mileena, Baraka, Jax, Kung Lao and Shang Tsung joined the returning cast, and Shao Kahn took over as the final boss, with Kintaro guarding the door before him.
The finishing moves were the headline. Every fighter got more than one fatality, the stages had their own kills, and the developers added Friendships and Babalities partly to poke fun at the people who had complained about the first game. There were secrets everywhere, from the hidden fighters to the small voice in the corner yelling "Toasty!" after an uppercut.
It also simply plays better than the original. Combos link more naturally, the special moves come out cleaner, and matches between two players who know the game are quick and mean.
The point of this package is the arcade version on arcade controls. You get the same layout the cabinet had: high and low punch, high and low kick and block, all on buttons where your fingers fall. If you want the parts to match the cabinet too, choose Get the Official Sanwa Upgrade? and go with Sanwa joysticks and buttons together, or just one of them. Default Pandora Platinum Hardware stays the starting option. The lighter Sanwa buttons make fast fatality inputs and combo timing easier to hit cleanly.
The three videos on this page show Mortal Kombat 2 running on the Pandora Pro version.
Mortal Kombat 2 comes from the Mortal Kombat Life Retro Archive Card in slot one. That slot's other label, "No Game Card - YOU WONT HAVE ANY GAMES!", is a warning worth reading twice.
The card carries MK2 more than once: the arcade version, the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis ports, and two variants listed as Mortal Kombat 2 Plus (Unreleased) and Mortal Kombat 2 Challenger. The rest of the series is there too, from the first arcade game through Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Mortal Kombat 4 Gold. Click for Game List on the card for every title. Slots two and three take more cards, such as the Neo Geo or 3 and 4 Player Arcade Games Archive, if you want to keep building. The hardware style can be the Pandora Dual Panel, the Pandora Single Panel or the Pandora Wireless 2 Joystick Separated Edition.
