About this product
Mortal Kombat 4 moved the series off flat digitized sprites and into polygons, and the Pandora Game Console Pro can play it. Better still, it plays Mortal Kombat Gold, the Dreamcast edition with extra fighters that were never in the MK4 arcade cabinet or the PS1 version.
Midway released MK4 in arcades in 1997. The fatalities, the run button and the uppercut that sends someone across the screen all came along into 3D. What was new was a sidestep, a little depth to the arenas, and weapons: most fighters can pull one out mid fight, and if they drop it, anyone can pick it up and use it. Picking up a dropped weapon and hitting its owner with it is about as Mortal Kombat as it gets.
Gold arrived on the Sega Dreamcast in 1999. It keeps the MK4 cast of Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Liu Kang, Sonya, Jax, Reptile, Tanya and the rest, then brings back Kitana, Mileena, Baraka, Kung Lao, Cyrax and Sektor from the earlier games. If you only know the arcade roster, it is a much bigger game than you remember.
On the console's arcade-quality sticks you can play it 1 on 1 or 2 on 2.
MK4 and MK Gold come on an archive card, and you must add one to play. The first slot on this page is the Mortal Kombat Life Retro Archive Card, which runs the whole history: the arcade versions of Mortal Kombat 1, 2, 3 and Ultimate MK3, the Super Nintendo and Genesis ports, Mortal Kombat Trilogy and Mythologies on PS1, and Mortal Kombat 4 Gold for Dreamcast. Click for Game List for the bonus entries. The third slot can hold the 3D Fighting Game Archive Card, which carries the PS1 version of MK4 as well as Mortal Kombat 4 Gold.
The options are the Pandora Dual Panel, the Pandora Single Panel and the Pandora Wireless 2 Joystick Separated Edition.
Stay with the Default Pandora Platinum Hardware or pick Sanwa buttons, Sanwa joysticks, or the full Sanwa set. Run cancels and fatality inputs come out cleaner on a Sanwa lever, and the buttons need a lighter press.
Slot two offers the 3 and 4 Player Arcade Games Archive, Mario Kart Madness & Friends and the Neo Geo Arcade Games List Archive. Slot three adds the 3D Fighting card mentioned above, plus Retro Arcade Games List Archive and Run & Gun Games List Archive. "No Additional Game Archive" keeps a slot empty.
This package is built on the Pro mainboard, which is the board that supports Mortal Kombat 4 and MK Gold. The two videos on this page show it running.
