About this product
This is the original Mortal Kombat arcade game, the 1992 Midway release that started the whole series, packaged with a Pandora Game Console so you can play it on a real stick at home. The arcade version, not one of the home ports that came after it.
Ed Boon and John Tobias filmed real actors and turned them into sprites, which made the game look like nothing else in the arcade that year. Then they added blood, bone-crunching sound and a finishing move at the end of every match. Parents panicked, Congress held hearings, and the video game rating system that came out of it is still printed on game boxes today. Kids, meanwhile, lined up their quarters.
The roster is small by later standards: Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade, Kano, Raiden, Scorpion and Sub-Zero. Beat everyone and you face Goro, the four-armed half-dragon who ended a lot of quarters early, and after him the sorcerer Shang Tsung, who copies the rest of the cast. Reptile hides on The Pit stage if you know the conditions.
The controls are worth knowing before you sit down. Mortal Kombat used high and low punch, high and low kick, and a dedicated block button, which is a layout that makes far more sense on an arcade panel than on a controller. Uppercuts, sweeps and the timing on a fatality all come back fast once your hand is on a lever.
Mortal Kombat arrives on the Mortal Kombat Life Retro Archive Card, which is the choice in the first card slot. The other option in that slot is "No Game Card - YOU WONT HAVE ANY GAMES!", and the console really does ship empty without one.
The card holds much more than the first game. It also has Mortal Kombat 2, Mortal Kombat 3 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 in their arcade versions, the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis ports, Mortal Kombat Trilogy and Mythologies for the PS1, and Mortal Kombat 4 Gold for the Dreamcast. Click for Game List to see the whole thing.
The second slot offers the 3 and 4 Player Arcade Games Archive, Mario Kart Madness & Friends or the Neo Geo card. The third slot adds the 3D Fighting Game Archive Card and the Retro Arcade card to the choices.
