About this product
NBA Jam is the 1993 Midway arcade basketball game, and the version on this Pandora Game Console package is the arcade original, not one of the home ports. Each side has two players from a real NBA roster, people dunk from near the free throw line, and the announcer yells "boomshakalaka" when someone gets stuffed.
It earned more quarters than almost anything else in its day, and it set the template Midway reused for years. Hit three shots in a row and your player catches fire, the ball leaves a trail of flames, and every shot seems to fall until the other side scores. Games are short and loud and anyone can pick one up, which is why NBA Jam still gets played at parties by people who never touch a sports game otherwise.
NBA Jam lives on the 3 and 4 Player Arcade Games Archive Card, the game card in the first slot on this page. The card is built around games meant for a crowd, and the arcade lineup next to NBA Jam includes NBA Jam Tournament Edition, NBA Hangtime and NBA Max Hangtime, plus The Simpsons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Turtles in Time, X-Men, Sunset Riders, Gauntlet and WWF Wrestlefest. Click for Game List to see every title. The alternative, "No Game Card - YOU WONT HAVE ANY GAMES!", ships the console with nothing on it.
You do have to pick a hardware style before checkout. Any of the three plugs into an HDMI television.
NBA Jam was designed for an arcade lever plus turbo, shoot and pass buttons. Turbo is the button you will wear out first, and a full-size arcade button takes that abuse better than a pad. Steals and shoves happen fast, and the lever keeps your player moving where you mean him to.
The page also asks "Get the Official Sanwa Upgrade?" Sanwa buttons, Sanwa joysticks, or both are on offer, or you can stay with Default Pandora Platinum Hardware. For a party game the stock parts are fine. If the console is going to see daily games, the Sanwa lever is lighter and faster.
The second slot lets you add the 3D Fighting Game Archive Card, Mario Kart Madness & Friends, Mortal Kombat Life Retro or the Retro Arcade Games List Archive. For a third card, choose from Neo Geo Arcade, Mortal Kombat Life Retro, Run & Gun or Mario Kart Madness & Friends. Both slots can be left at No Additional Game Archive. The two videos on this page show NBA Jam running on the Pandora Game Console.
