Smash TV is the 1990 Williams arcade game where a TV game show pays contestants to survive rooms full of armed thugs, and this Pandora Game Console package plays the real arcade version. Eugene Jarvis, who made Robotron, designed it with Mark Turmell, and you can tell. It is Robotron with a studio audience.
The show is set in a grim future, very much in the Blade Runner mood, and the host loves every second of it. You fight from room to room, grab cash and prizes, and meet bosses like Mutoid Man at the end of each arena. The arcade sound is clear and loud, host lines included.
Smash TV is a twin-stick shooter from before anyone called it that. One joystick walks, the other shoots, and they are completely independent, so you can run left while firing right or circle a crowd while spraying it. On a gamepad that never felt right. On a Pandora Game Console panel the two arcade sticks sit side by side, which is close to how the cabinet was laid out.
The cabinet also let two players fight at once, and so does the game here.
Smash TV is on the Midway Arcade & Monsters Game Archive Card, the first card the builder offers. That card is a Midway and Williams night out: Total Carnage, Gauntlet and Gauntlet 2, Rampage, Arch Rivals, Spy Hunter, Primal Rage, Hydro Thunder, Wizard of Wor and WWF Wrestlemania The Arcade Game. "No Game Card - YOU WONT HAVE ANY GAMES!" is the other choice for that slot. Pick it and the console has nothing to run, because we ship it without any software installed.
For hardware you can choose the Pandora Single Panel, the Pandora Dual Panel or the Pandora Wireless 2 Joystick Separated Edition.
The second archive slot offers 3 and 4 Player Arcade Games, Mario Kart Madness & Friends, Run & Gun, Neo Geo, Retro Arcade and 3D Fighting. The third slot offers most of the same cards. Both can be set to No Additional Game Archive. If you like Smash TV, the Run & Gun card is the natural second pick.
The choices are Default Pandora Platinum Hardware, Upgrade to Sanwa Buttons, Upgrade to Sanwa Joysticks and Upgrade to Sanwa Joysticks & Buttons. Smash TV barely uses the buttons, so if you only upgrade one part for this game, make it the joysticks.
