Soul Calibur started in arcades in 1998, and a year later the Dreamcast version became the reason a lot of people bought a Dreamcast. With this Pandora Game Console package you play Namco's weapons fighter from an arcade stick, two players at a time, on whatever TV you have.
Every fighter carries a weapon, and the weapon decides how they play. Mitsurugi's katana is quick and honest. Astaroth's axe is slow and ruins your afternoon if he connects. Ivy's sword uncoils into a whip, Voldo fights with his back to you, and Nightmare swings a blade nearly as tall as he is. Inferno waits at the end.
Soul Calibur let you walk and run freely around the ring in any direction instead of only stepping in and out. Namco called it the Eight-Way Run. Sidestep a vertical slash, punish it, step back before the counter. Guard Impacts let you knock an attack aside if you read it early enough, which is where matches between two experienced players get interesting.
All of that is lever work. A pad can manage it, but the arcade joystick is what the game was designed around, and you feel the difference the first time you circle around an opponent without thinking about it.
The game comes from the archive card, so the first slot has to be filled. It offers the Fighting Masters Archive Card or "No Game Card - YOU WONT HAVE ANY GAMES!", and that second choice leaves the console empty.
Slots two and three are optional. Both include the 3D Fighting Game Archive Card, which lists Soul Calibur along with Tekken 5, Tekken 6, Power Stone and Power Stone 2, so most 3D fighting fans will want it in one of them. Click for Game List on a card to check the full list before you decide. The 3 and 4 Player, Mortal Kombat Life, Mario Kart Madness & Friends, Neo Geo and Retro Arcade cards are offered too.
You can build this as the Pandora Single Panel, with both sticks on one panel, or as the Pandora Dual Panel or the Pandora Wireless 2 Joystick Separated Edition, where each player has their own controller.
Sanwa makes the parts inside Japanese arcade cabinets, and you can upgrade just the buttons, just the joysticks, or the full set, or stay with Default Pandora Platinum Hardware.
