About this product
Super Contra is Konami's 1988 arcade sequel to Contra, and this Pandora Game Console package is built around the arcade version. Most people in the US met it as Super C on the NES. That port is good, but the cabinet came first, with its own music and more going on at once on the screen.
Bill and Lance are back, two commandos against an alien army, with a second player able to drop in for co-op. The stages switch between side-scrolling runs and top-down sections where you push up the screen through tanks and turrets. You get more aliens and more guns than the first game, and the soundtrack is one of the best Konami put in an arcade board.
Contra games are about two things: moving and shooting in eight directions without thinking about it, and dying the moment you stop paying attention. A real arcade lever with a clean diagonal makes the first part easier. Nothing helps with the second part except practice.
Co-op on a shared panel is the way this game was meant to be played. One player covers the left side of the screen, the other covers the right, and you argue about who took the spread gun.
The hardware style menu also lists the Pandora Wireless 2 Joystick Separated Edition next to the Dual and Single Panel.
Super Contra lives on the Run & Gun Games List Archive Card, the first choice in the builder. The card is a good one for anyone who likes this kind of game. If you pick "No Game Card - YOU WONT HAVE ANY GAMES!", that is exactly what you get. A second and third card slot are optional. The page offers 3 and 4 Player Arcade Games, 3D Fighting, Mario Kart Madness & Friends, Retro Arcade, Mortal Kombat Life and Neo Geo across those two slots, or No Additional Game Archive.
You can keep the Default Pandora Platinum Hardware or upgrade to Sanwa buttons, Sanwa joysticks, or both. For a run and gun game the Sanwa lever is the one we would spend on first, since the whole game happens on the stick. The Pro board runs the arcade version on any of the Pandora Game Console styles, and the videos on this page show it in motion.
